The first NYIOP of our tenth season was a great success! The new changes were clearly needed and the result was a smoother process with more focus on YOUR audition and less focus on anything else. Now we move on to our second session of the season!

**************************************************************************************************************

Welcome 2012!!!

We are very happy to announce the NEXT New York NYIOP session of our TENTH SEASON of auditions!

February 20-23, 2012 in New York City

Theaters confirmed and repertoire to be posted here once confirmed

We are making many changes this new season – all aimed at saying THANK YOU to all of the artists, agencies and theaters that have supported us over the past seasons. All of you who helped us to revolutionize the process of auditioning for theaters from all over the world. Thanks to you, we have been able to help countless singers find good contracts with theaters without the customary enormous expenses that used to be the only option!

So, HERE’S TO YOU!!!!!

These are the major changes for our new season:

There is only ONE PRICE: $300.
Everyone pays the exact same price and everyone pays. Period. This is a discount of over $100 from last year’s fee and offered as a THANK YOU for these past TEN SEASONS. This is the amount we charged for the VERY FIRST sessions of auditions held back in the 2002-2003 season. In gratitude for your support, we are rolling the fees back this entire season to our fees from ten years ago.

Yes, Feedback.
Real Feedback! Not numbers, not averages, not Like or Dislike! Every singer that participates in the NYIOP Preview Audition will receive at least TWO one-line sentences (à la Twitter) of real and immediate feedback from two people chosen randomly across the panel of listeners. Those singing in the Final Auditions will receive the same one line of feedback from EACH panel member attending the audition. The panelists will have the option to choose to remain anonymous BUT you will hear their thoughts in THEIR words!

Home Sweet Home – and you can hear yourself better, too!
We return to our home at DiCapo Opera WITH a revolutionary new stage monitoring system! Two seasons ago we moved from DiCapo Opera Theater and we have missed it ever since – we have finally found the way to move “home” while still providing you artists with the best possible experience! NYIOP will be the FIRST EVER to use the new stage monitoring system at DiCapo Opera Theater for improved comfort while singing on the stage! Every theater we hosted during our years at DiCapo preferred the acoustics there to any other venue we have had. Now we give the same comfort to the artists for a perfect combination!

ADDITIONALLY, because of this monitoring system, we are working out the details to let you also have the option to have a live recording of your NYIOP Audition! In concept, we will make it possible to get either (or both) an audio recording and a video recording. This service will be offered at an additional fee to the audition – but imagine having an instant tool to review your audition! More details as soon as we finalize the process!

Full Contact Followup.
Complete information will be provided at the audition or via email just afterEach singer taking part in the Final Auditions will receive a sheet a the audition that lists the name of the theater, the name of the representative as well as the email address the theater supplies us for requesting information and feedback from your audition. Those taking
part in the NYIOP Preview Audition will receive this information via email within two days of the end of the final auditions for each session.

Full Access Pass to all the REAL answers you won’t get anywhere else!!!!
For each session, we will offer a free NYIOP Forum on the day before – masterclasses, Q&A panel, etc etc

Beginning on December 11, we will offer a three-hour NYIOP Forum on the day before the auditions begin where we will invite a panel of industry professionals (agents, casting directors, teachers, coaches, critics etc) to attend and answer any and all the questions you have. In addition, when you arrive, come prepared to sing! Three artists will be randomly chosen from those who attend and notify us they wish to sing to take part in a masterclass given by one or more of the panel attending the Forum meeting! And if that was not enough - ONE person will be chosen to receive a completely FREE NYIOP Audition on the following days.We are offering this at NO ADDITIONAL COST to any artist – this is our gift to you. To succeed in any business, you need the information that helps you better focus your efforts. As an additional thank you to our artists, we want to empower you with the real-world information that will help you better manage your career. And there might even be Pie and Punch!!!

FINALLY!!!

We are very happy to announce the FIRST New York NYIOP session of our TENTH SEASON of auditions!

December 12 – 15, 2011 in New York City

And if that was not enough - ONE person will be chosen to receive a completely FREE NYIOP Audition on the following days.

We are offering this at NO ADDITIONAL COST to any artist – this is our gift to you. To succeed in any business, you need the information that helps you better focus your efforts. As an additional thank you to our artists, we want to empower you with the real-world information that will help you better manage your career. And there might even be Pie and Punch!!!

We are happy to announce that David Blackburn has joined IMG Artists as a Vice President in the Vocal Division and will open an office in Berlin, Germany. In his new capacity he will build and manage a small roster of select artists, focusing on singers and conductors, and will also create a number of new projects aimed at providing innovative services to the entire opera community.

In addition to his new duties at IMG Artists, he will remain in a virtual position as Casting Consultant at the Palm Beach Opera and will be responsible for the entire casting process there for both mainstage productions and the young artist program.

David will continue to manage all NYIOP projects worldwide and is committed to maintaining the “neutrality” of NYIOP and it’s auditions. Since its founding in 2002, NYIOP has filled the niche of being neither manager nor agency and this strength has allowed it to maintain the needed function of connecting all aspects of the opera business – agencies to singers to theaters etc – without bias or prejudice. Even though its founder now embarks on a career that encompasses artist management, NYIOP will remain separate and function exactly as it has in the past.

We look forward to continuing to serve singers from all over the world and are excited about the final NYC session for this season and our annual European summer auditions in Lyon in June. We are already planning our tenth season in 2011-12 and are still working to help artists and theaters meet and change the way the world auditions.

The NYIOP Preview Auditions took place on December 14 and 15 at NOLA Studios, located at 244 West 54th Street on the 10th floor.

The Final Auditions took place on December 16 and 17 at Merkin Concert Hall, located at 129 West 67th Street, just west of the new Apple Store.

Companies who attended the December 14-17, 2010 NYIOPs in New York were:

Theatre du Capitole, Toulouse*

Metropolitan Opera New York

Teatro Municipal de Santiago Chile*

ABAO Bilbao Spain*

Lyric Opera of Chicago IL

Opera Bergen, Norway

Dallas Opera TX

Los Angeles Opera CA*

Washington National Opera DC

Palm Beach Opera FL*

The list of agencies who attended the Preview Auditions were:

Ana de Archuleta (ADA Artists)

Kathy Olsen Simpson (Encompass Arts)

Alex Fletcher (Alex Fletcher Artists Management)

Nick Netos (Alpha Artists Management)

Brian Jauhiainen (Bel Canto Global Arts)

Vanessa Uzan (Pinnacle Arts Management)

Bernard Uzan (Pinnacle Arts Management)

Kristin Cowdin (Guy Barzilay Artists Management)

Mitchell Piper (Piper Anselmi Artists)

The auditions were a great success and I have already been told over several offers from the companies who attended. In addition, this was the largest number of agencies we have had for the Preview Auditions – this shows us that the Preview Auditions are becoming the best way for many agencies to find new talent that they would not have a chance to hear otherwise. In fact, several of the agencies tell us that they are starting to send singers who wish to audition for them directly to NYIOP as a way to hear potential people for their roster. Another way that NYIOP is helping to find new opportunities for singers.

Happy 2011 to all of you and I hope that it is a healthy and happy year for each of you. My 2011 has already started with a bang. In Palm Beach, we started with a performance of Handel’s Ariodante with the Young Artists on January 6th and continue with a Verdi Requiem today with Dolora Zajick, Angela Meade (a NYIOP alumnus – she sang several times over her time at AVA), Carl Tanner and Morris Robinson. And this coming week we have an Orfeo ed Euridice coming as well. It is a busy time! Also, I am working to finalize the houses and repertoire for what looks to be a very interesting session. We listed the houses coming on the Updates page and there are several theaters that have never attended a NYIOP before – I know it is hard to believe that there are still theaters who have NOT attended! I hope you like the group we are putting together and I look forward to hearing you all again soon. Again – if you have any thoughts or suggestions for us, just drop me an email – davidblackburn@nyiop.com. Best of all – Dave
